As mentioned in the Protecting Your Immune System Vehicle article, there are many individuals in this world that do not wash their hands properly. Even worse, there are a lot that don’t wash their hands after using the restroom. We’ve all seen this happen. It should go without saying that hand-washing can help prevent or reduce illness. Better yet, if you regularly wash your hands both before and after doing certain activities you can remove germs from your luscious body and reduce the chance of spreading germs to others. The best way to protect our bodies is to start with protecting our hands.

Let’s Discuss When Should You Wash Your Hands

  1. Before and after using the toilet
  2. After you blow your nose, cough, or sneeze
  3. Before, during, and after making your food
  4. Before eating said food
  5. After handling garbage
  6. Both before and after taking care of an individual that is sick
  7. Before and after taking care of a cut or wound
  8. After physically interacting with animals, animal food, or animal waste

Next, How To Wash Your Hands Properly (Don’t Skip Steps!)

  1. Rinse your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the faucet handle, then apply soap.
  2. Rub your hands together with soap. Make sure to get the backs of your hands, in between  your fingers, and underneath your fingernails.
  3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds (Count to 20 in your head).
  4. Flush your hands under clean, running water until the soap is gone.
  5. Dry your hands with a clean towel.
  6. Make sure to turn the water faucet handle off using a paper towel to keep your clean hands.

Are you wondering why you should wash your hands with with clean, running water and apply soap?

Clean, running water is needed as opposed to a container of standing water because your hands could become recontaminated with the germs you originally washed off.

Using soap to wash your hands tends to be more effective than using water by itself because the substances in the soap help lift soil and microbes from the skin. People also have a greater tendency to scrub and lather their hands more thoroughly when using soap, which will in turn remove more germs. 

So What Should You Do If There is No Soap and Clean, Running Water?

If available, you are strongly advised to use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Read the label to make sure the sanitizer has least 60% alcohol. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers will decrease the number of germs on hands quickly, most of the time. Be aware, they cannot eliminate all germs and should not be used as replacement for washing hands.

How to Apply Hand Sanitizers?

  • Add the correct amount (present on the label) of sanitizer to one hand palm.
  • Rub hands together with the sanitizer liquid.
  • Lather the product over the entirety of your hands and fingers until you feel that your hands are dry.

Let us discuss How You Can Protect Your Immune System Vehicle, but first let’s discuss how we perceive this vehicle. Often times, we human beings succumb to an “out of sight, out of mind” philosophy. If we can’t see it with our own two eyes then we either ignore or give very little attention to the matter. This is one of the factors that influence why our health isn’t always up to par. We can’t see the mechanics and the processes occurring within the body so we only focus outwardly. This is a mistake. Think about you car, would you judge the performance of your car based on its exterior?  

So what is happening inside? We have an immune system full of cells that capture bacteria and fights viruses that cause colds and flu. Our immune cells also fight off infections. This system is working in us 24/7 without us even consciously thinking about it. That’s why we need to take care of it because it takes care of us. Like with any vehicle, if not properly cared for it will breakdown in time. Let’s discuss ways to 5 ways Protect Your Immune System Vehicle. 

 

Tip #1: You Look Like You Haven’t Slept In Days

It is easy to get caught up in “hustle” culture today, we are constantly being bashed over the head and told we need to work and work and then do more work. Emphasis on sleep is more of a pleasantry nowadays.  This is problematic because a lack of sleep is linked to a multitude of health problems as it is a contributor to a weakened immune system. Our bodies need time to recharge. 

They say ideally you should be receiving 7-9 hours of sleep per night as an adult.  Yeah right. Most of us are lucky if we get 6 hours. Nonetheless, 6 is certainly better than 5 and exceptional compared to 4. If you cannot manage to get the required amount of sleep during the weekdays when you’re working than do you darnedest to make up on the weekends. Your vehicle will run better if your body has been given time to recharge. 

Tip #2: Stop Eating Badly

This one is simple. Eat your fruits and veggies! Simple, but not easy. There are so many options of healthy foods, unhealthy foods, and then there’s the foods that we like to eat (which can be a mixture of both). It’s important to be aware of the substances you’re consuming that will serve as fuel for your body. 

If your car requires premium gas, it would be unwise for you to give it regular gas. Stop giving your body regular gas. You need premium gas! Eat more greens (salad, kale, spinach, string beans) and eat more fruits (oranges, melons, blueberries, pineapples). It is best to seek five to seven servings of vegetables and fruits everyday to acquire immune-boosting vitamins and minerals.

It should go without saying but just in case— Don’t Drink Too Much Alcohol. You’ve never heard any doctor recommend you drink alcohol to improve your immune system and chances are you never will. So drink in moderation. When operating a vehicle, there’s a reason they say don’t drink and drive.

Tip #3: Make Certain Your Hands Are Clean

Let’s shelve politeness for a moment, there are many individuals in this world that do not wash their hands properly. There is an uncomfortable amount of those individuals that don’t wash their hands after using the restroom. Don’t Be Them! 

Proper hygiene and hand-washing can prevent germs from spreading. Particularly spreading throughout your body. Don’t make your immune system work any harder than it has to. Reduce the amount of germs you come in contact with by washing your hands with soap and water especially before food prepping and after using the restroom. Simple in theory, but seemingly not easy for some people to execute.

Lastly, make sure to cover both your nose and your mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. If there is no tissue around, it is better to cough or sneeze into your elbow opposed to your hand. You use your hands for many things so treat them with care.  

Tip #4: They Call Me Activity…Physical Activity

You’ve got to be active. No way around it. The recommended amount of exercises most days of the week is a minimum of 30 minutes. Why? For all of our friends that do not like to break a sweat or feel sweaty know this, physical activity provides the added perks of stress management which can decrease the risk of some chronic diseases that could weaken your immune system. Stress is known to increase the risk of different illnesses.

Physical activity can possibly provide the following benefits: Cleansing of bacteria from the lungs which can decrease your chances of getting the flu or a cold, Increased body temperature before and after exercise which can stop bacterial growth, and impeding the release of stress hormones. 

A good vehicle looks nice but a great vehicle looks nice and runs even better. A strong immune system needs to make you look great on the outside but feel great on the inside as well.

Tip #5: Don’t Be Afraid of Shots

You need to keep up to date with your vaccinations. Often times, severe infections can be avoided through immunization/vaccinations. There is current debate on the necessity of vaccinations but vaccines have been proven to be safe and very effective. For these reasons, adults should make sure their vaccinations are current and that their children have received the vaccines recommended by their trusted pediatricians. Note, there is an opportunity to get the flu vaccine every year to protect yourself during flu season.

Worse case scenario you ignore all of the recommended suggestions above, what happens? Well typically, with older age there is a decline in immunity. When you have a compromised immune system, you open yourself up to heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, blood disorders, cancer, and autoimmune diseases. Such medical conditions will eat up your body’s energy and some can interfere encroach on the activity of  immune system proteins. In a nutshell, nothing good. 

In conclusion, the best ways to protect your vehicle is to give it time to recharge, provide it with proper fuel, keep the exterior clean, physically test its limits, and get it routine checked.

Breast cancer study confirms importance of multigenerational family data to assess risk

A team of researchers headed by Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health Professor Mary Beth Terry, Ph.D., evaluated four commonly used breast cancer prediction models. Their findings signified that family-history-based models work better than non-family-history based models. This is true even for women having average or below-average chance of breast cancer. The study may be the largest individual analysis to validate four widely used forms of breast cancer hazard and has the longest running dataset available to date. The findings are published online in The Lancet Oncology.
